Advanced Water Purification is Coming to the Valley of the Sun
Advanced Water Purification (AWP) is the future of drinking water in the greater Phoenix area. Using proven technology, the City of Phoenix Water Services Department is building new infrastructure to create a reliable and sustainable source of clean drinking water for our residents and businesses.
The first AWP facility is currently under construction as part of the Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant Rehabilitation project.
Pure Water Phoenix

Pure Water Phoenix is the program name for the City’s AWP facilities, as well as the public service campaign to help residents and businesses understand the benefits of AWP for Phoenix and the greater region.
Why Pure Water Phoenix Matters

Phoenix depends on surface water for about 98 percent of its water supply, primarily from the Colorado, Salt, and Verde Rivers, delivered through an extensive canal system. While groundwater serves as a backup and conservation efforts have successfully reduced overall demand, changes to climate patterns and prolonged drought continue to threaten the reliability of these surface water sources.
To secure Phoenix’s water future, the City is investing in Advanced Water Purification to create a local, renewable source of drinking water to create greater independence from river flows.

What is Advanced Water Purification?

AWP is a proven technology process that safely and efficiently purifies recycled water into drinking water. The water produced is so clean it meets or exceeds federal and local drinking water requirements.

Recycled water, also referred to as reclaimed water, is domestic wastewater that is cleaned and reused for beneficial nonpotable (non-drinking) purposes like irrigating parks, wetland restoration, and industrial cooling. Through AWP, Phoenix will be able to purify recycled water, creating a local and high-quality source of drinking water.

How AWP Works
It all starts with our existing recycled water facilities – water Phoenix has been cleaning for decades for beneficial uses.
Did you know?
Phoenix currently recycles 97 percent of the 70 billion gallons of wastewater generated annually, delivering it for use in agriculture, energy production, urban irrigation, aquifer recharge, and riparian wetland maintenance.
Recycled Water Process

Recycled water is then sent to an Advanced Water Purification Facility, where it goes through an ultrafiltration process that purifies the water to high drinking water standards.

AWP Completes Our Urban Water Cycle

Benefits of AWP:
- Diversify Phoenix’s water portfolio, reducing reliance on unpredictable surface water supplies.
- Increase resilience against future drought conditions and shortages.
- Provide a high-quality, purified water source using innovative technology to meet or exceed drinking water standards.
