Pure Water Phoenix at Cave Creek Plant

Located in northern Phoenix, Pure Water Phoenix at the Cave Creek plant will bring a new and renewable source of purified drinking water to Phoenix water customers. Between 2000 and 2008, the Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant delivered recycled water to parks and golf courses before being closed due to a drop in regional demand. By 2027, the next generation of the plant will feature Advanced Water Purification, which will initially produce nearly 7 million gallons of purified drinking water each day - enough water to serve 25,000 households. In the future, when the demand for water in the area increases, production capacity can be doubled. The Cave Creek facility is one of three water purification projects envisioned within the City of Phoenix.

Construction to rehabilitate the Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant began in August 2024. The map above shows its location. Click on the map above to see larger version in pdf format.

Upgrades to the Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant

The upgraded Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant includes advanced water purification (displayed in rendering) that will purify recycled water to drinking water using (1) Reverse Osmosis and (2) UV Advanced Oxidation technologies.

The existing facility will be upgraded to include Advanced Water Purification, which will purify recycled water, produced on-site, into drinking water. When fully operational, the new water will then be available for use in the drinking water system.

Demonstration Period

Before sending purified water to the City’s distribution system, Pure Water Phoenix at Cave Creek will undergo a one-year demonstration period where the technology and product water will be monitored and tested to ensure compliance with State regulations. During the demonstration phase, this water will be added to our existing groundwater supplies through groundwater recharge. Groundwater recharge occurs when water seeps into the ground to replenish underground aquifers for later use.

Pure Water Phoenix Timeline

By 2033, Phoenix's water landscape will be transformed, beginning with the anticipated commissioning of Pure Water Phoenix at Cave Creek facility. Below is the current timeline for Pure Water Phoenix program, which includes several new Pure Water facilities.
