Phoenix Fire Department Announces Three New FEMA Search and Rescue Dogs

The Phoenix Fire Department, in partnership with FEMA, introduced its three newest search dogs, Bunker, Ryder and Sawyer, during a media event held this week. The highly trained search and rescue dogs were showcased alongside their handlers, offering a first look at the teams that will support search and rescue operations across the region.

During the event, attendees observed a live training demonstration highlighting the specialized skills the dogs use during rescue missions. The dogs navigated obstacles, executed agility exercises, and performed scent detection drills designed to simulate real world disaster conditions. Handlers also demonstrated the communication techniques and teamwork required to deploy canine units effectively during emergencies.

The addition of Bunker, Ryder and Sawyer marked a significant enhancement to the department’s search and rescue capabilities. Each dog will undergo an extensive training period with their handler before being eligible to be actively used during local emergencies or deployed for FEMA emergencies with Arizona Task Force One.

The Phoenix Fire Department believes that these new search and rescue teams strengthen the city and region’s readiness for disasters and reinforce its commitment to protecting the community.
