On Saturday, August 15th, the Phoenix Fire Department unveiled a street sign honoring fallen firefighter‑paramedic Miguel “Chupa” Herrera Angulo, recognizing his years of service, sacrifice, and lasting impact on the department and the community he served.
The street sign, located off 63rd avenue just outside of Phoenix Fire Station 25 where Angulo operated out of for over a decade, will serve as an enduring public tribute to Angulo’s enduring legacy and the profound mark he left on those who knew him and on the community he helped protect.
The ceremony featured remarks from Phoenix Fire Department leadership, representatives from the United Phoenix Firefighters Association Local 493, members of the Angulo family, and crew members who had worked closely alongside him. Attendees reflected on Miguel Angulo’s commitment to public service and the deep bonds he formed throughout his career.
Angulo served the Phoenix Fire Department with honor for 15 years, beginning his tenure in 2006. On July 22, 2021, while responding to an EMS call, he contracted occupational COVID‑19. He was hospitalized on August 1, intubated on August 5, and passed away on September 6, 2021, just two weeks after celebrating his 42nd birthday in the hospital.
Before joining Phoenix Fire, Angulo served with the El Mirage Fire Department and worked as a Flight Paramedic with AirEvac. Friends, colleagues, and community members remembered him for his dedication, humor, compassion, and unwavering loyalty to his crew. He is survived by his six children and his partner.
