The City of Phoenix and the University of Arizona Center for Urban Smart Agriculture are offering two new grant opportunities to help small-to-mid-sized Maricopa County producers to build their businesses and incorporate sustainable practices. Completed applications for both grant opportunities are due no later than 5 PM on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Food Systems Grants
Resilient & Sustainable Agriculture Grant
The Resilient & Sustainable Agriculture (RSA) Grant aims to help local producers adapt to Maricopa County’s changing climate. This grant program will provide awards of up to $30,000 to implement new practices and infrastructure that help growers adapt to extreme heat and drought.
Example Projects Include:
- Water management and efficiency measures
- Renewable energy (agrivoltaics, photovoltaics)
- Implementing regenerative agricultural practices
- Shade structures
- Greenhouses with sustainability features
- Soil health improvement projects
- Enhancing wildlife habitat and biodiversity
- Utilizing hydroponic and aquaponic growing methods
- Food waste mitigation efforts
- Other projects that increase producers’ climate resilience and strengthen the local food system
Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for this program, operations must:
- Be located within Maricopa County.
- Be actively farming, ranching, or starting your farm or ranch operation.
- Have fewer than 50 employees.
Service Eligibility Partners Grant
The Service Eligibility Partners (SEP) Grant aims to help small growers become eligible for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) services and programs. This grant program will provide awards of up to $10,000 to help improve growers’ capacity and business operations.
Example Projects Include:
- Professional development in operating an agricultural business
- Enhancing financial literacy
- Implementing or enhancing record keeping
- Incorporation of an operation
- Translation services
- Other needs producers identify to increase eligibility for FSA & NRCS programs
Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the program, operations must:
- Be located within Maricopa County.
- Be actively farming, ranching, or starting your farm or ranch operation.
- Have 5 or fewer employees.
- Operate on less than 50 acres.
- Have an annual gross revenue of less than $25,000.
