Retired Police Officers Wanted for School Resource Officer Roles

Phoenix PD School Resource Officer at school

If you are a retired law enforcement officer from Arizona, enjoy working with children and have a passion for creating a safe school environment, we have a great job opportunity for you! The Phoenix Police Department is looking to hire retired law enforcement officers to work as School Resource Officers.

SROs play a vital role in maintaining safety and security for students, faculty, and staff on school campuses. SROs also serve as visible deterrents to threats, respond to emergencies, and build positive relationships within the school community.

The positions have been created as a result of new legislation signed into law in May 2025, which expanded the School Safety Program. The expansion allows police officers, who have retired from the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS), to work as school resource officers.

These positions are temporary positions funded by grants through the Arizona Department of Education for one year, with the potential for additional year extensions. These temporary positions will offer benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially in the city’s retirement program.

Staffing shortages at the Phoenix Police Department have made it challenging for to fill school requests for SROs on campuses. This will not only help fill those gaps but also address the staffing shortage by keeping Phoenix officers on the streets, answering calls from our community.

The City of Phoenix opened recruiting for these positions on October 6, 2025, and recruitment closes on October 20, 2025.
