Household Hazardous Waste Collection

A person loads boxes of household hazardous waste into a truck.

Public Works is offering a program that assists solid waste residential customers with the proper disposal of their household hazardous waste (HHW).

HHW should NOT be placed in the trash or recycling containers for safety reasons. Hazardous materials need to be properly disposed of to protect human health and the environment, as well as protect residents and employees from harm and hazards caused by these toxic materials.

How to participate:

HHW collections will be unavailable between July 14 and September 2, 2025. Please plan accordingly.

Only customers with a residential solid waste account are eligible. Please refer to the upper right corner of your City Services Bill to obtain your account number as you will need this to proceed. If you are unsure of your eligibility to participate in this program, please contact the HHW team at hhwcollection@phoenix.gov.

Only 1 HHW home collection is allowed per Solid Waste customer per calendar year.

You will receive an email reminder 1-2 business days before your scheduled pick-up, and you’re all set!

Because HHW materials could cause harm, please take a moment to read our HHW Guidelines to ensure a safe pick-up.

HHW Guidelines

  • Have your current city services bill, account number and associated address available when scheduling.
  • Containing your HHW: All items must be secured in sealed leakproof containers, and then placed in a box clearly labeled “HHW”. If you have a damaged bucket or container with hazardous liquids that is leaking or may leak, please safely place it in a labeled and sealed, leakproof container to avoid spills.
  • Placement: Please ensure the box of items is placed outside next to your garage or front door, clearly visible and accessible to staff. DO NOT place any HHW at the curb, in the street or on the sidewalk.
  • All HHW items will be collected between the hours of 7am and 5pm. You will not be given a specific collection time, so please ensure your items are placed out for collection by 7am on your collection day.
  • Only 1 HHW home collection is allowed per Solid Waste customer per calendar year.

Basic Safety Practices When Dealing With Household Hazardous Waste

  1. Be familiar with all chemicals stored and used at your homes. Ask for a safety data sheet (SDS) when purchasing chemicals and be familiar with signal words (ex. “Caution," "Warning," or "Danger”). If an SDS is available, reach out the manufacturer
  2. All chemical containers should be closed and sealed and in good condition to prevent container leakage or breakage. Sun-rotted and brittle containers pose a risk of container breakage. If possible, leave materials in their original manufacturer packaging so they can be easily identified.
  3. Never mix chemicals of any type; this can lead to extremely dangerous situations and possible reactions.
  4. Flammable Liquids/Solids: Keep away from open flames, heat, and other incompatible materials (ex. Away from oxidizers).
  5. Corrosive Liquids/Solid: Keep away from heat. Store away from incompatibles materials (the mixing of acids and bases will cause chemical reactions). Store away from oxidizing materials.
  6. Toxic Liquids/Solids (Pesticides/Herbicides): Keep away from heat.
  7. Oxidizers Liquid/Solids: Keep away from open flames, heat, and other incompatible materials (organic material). Store away from all other chemicals. Prevent cross contamination with organic material, moisture, rainwater, or anything else that might cause chemical reactions or fire.
  8. Never abandon materials or handle unknown materials.
  9. Do not place any chemicals or batteries in your trash receptacle and utilize appropriate methods to dispose of waste.
