After a successful pilot program, the City of Phoenix is expanding its Emergency Lockbox Program citywide to better serve older adults and residents with mobility issues or disabilities. Vice Mayor Ann O’Brien worked with the Phoenix Fire Department and Phoenix Realtors to launch the pilot program in District 1 in January 2023.
“This is a great example of how we identified a need in the community and brought public and private partners together to create a solution,” she said. “Thanks to Phoenix Realtors for donating the lockboxes, the program allows our first responders quick, secure access to homes during emergencies—without breaking down doors.”
Since its inception, the pilot program has proven to be a vital resource. Phoenix firefighters have installed more than 200 lockboxes and responded to 257 service calls at homes enrolled in the program.
“This life-saving program is made possible through strong community collaboration and the ongoing support of City leadership who understand the critical importance of public safety and compassionate care.” Phoenix Fire Chief Mike Duran added. “By working together—with our residents, city officials, and local partners—we're creating a safer, more responsive Phoenix for everyone.”
One of the program’s early success stories involved a 92-year-old north Phoenix resident who had enrolled shortly after the pilot launched. On several occasions, crews were able to enter quickly to assist her after she had fallen and was unable to get up.
“The resident told our first responders the lockbox gave her peace of mind,” said Vice Mayor O’Brien. “And her daughter expressed deep appreciation when her mother recently moved to an assisted living facility.”
Lockbox codes are securely stored at the 911 Dispatch Center and shared only with first responders during emergency calls. In addition to requesting a new lockbox, Phoenix residents can register an existing lockbox, garage door code, or smart doorknob lock code to participate.
The program is free to Phoenix residents who are over 55 years old or have mobility challenges or disabilities that may prevent them from reaching the door during an emergency. Phoenix residents can learn more about eligibility and register for the program by emailing pfd.lockbox@phoenix.gov.
