56th Street from Thomas Road to Camelback Road Project

Using a Design Assistance Grant provided by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), a study was conducted to develop a design concept for implementation of bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements on 56th Street from Thomas Road to Camelback Road in Phoenix (1.5 miles).

This community-driven project was initiated to develop a consistent corridor that puts the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists first, meets ADA standards, completes bicycle and pedestrian gaps along the corridor, addresses utilities and storm drainage issues, and provides opportunities for green infrastructure and enhanced landscape features that provide shade. The proposal also promotes safe routes to school connections. The development of a complete streets environment that includes a sense of place is the overarching goal.

Project Details

Proposed improvements include:

  • A 10-12' multi-use path for younger cyclists, school-age children, families and pedestrians
  • Providing a continuous multi-use bicycle and pedestrian path on both west and east side of 56th street for safety and connectivity
  • A 24" storm drain down 56th Street from Thomas Road to Camelback Road to improve drainage
  • Low-water use trees for shade adjacent to the sidewalk and multi-use path
  • Possible changes or improvements to the existing roundabout at Exeter Boulevard
  • Upgraded curb ramps and sidewalks to the latest ADA standards
  • Traffic calming features to mitigate speed and improve overall safety

Project Milestones

This project has included extensive community input. The Street Transportation Department held three well-attended open houses for the 56th Street Corridor Study to gather input from the community. Approximately 330 residents attended the meetings and gave vital input on issues, design elements and alternative roadway cross-sections.
