Phoenix Receives 2025 SRP Champions of Sustainability Award

The City of Phoenix has been recognized by Salt River Project (SRP) with the prestigious Champions of Sustainability Award for its leadership in advancing clean energy, electrification, and equitable climate solutions across city operations.

Presented annually, SRP honors 12 Valley business and organizations for being Champions of Sustainability and outstanding participants in SRP Business Solutions™ programs: municipalities, companies and organizations that standouts for their commitment to sustainability and innovation as they serve their customers and the community.

Since 2014, we have come together to celebrate the achievements of our commercial customers who, regardless of the size of their business or organization, are saving energy, reducing costs and taking advantage of our many different rebate programs. It also marks the fourth year under SRP’s 2035 Sustainability Goals related to our Energy Efficiency, SRP Business Demand Response Program™, Transportation Electrification and Electric Technologies initiatives.

Phoenix is the state capital of Arizona and, with over 1.6 million residents, ranks as the fifth-most populous city in the United States. It is recognized as a growing center for technology and high-tech manufacturing, alongside strong sectors in finance, retail, distribution and healthcare. The City of Phoenix, in collaboration with SRP, is actively pursuing a more sustainable future by participating in and undertaking various renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives including lighting, HVAC, Business Demand Response, Solar Choice Select and participate in Sustainable Energy Offering, in the Biomass Power Partnership.

“This recognition reflects the power of collaboration,” said Carla De La Chapa, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Phoenix. “Every milestone we achieve, whether in clean energy, EV infrastructure, or shade equity, is the result of strong partnerships across city departments, with our utilities, our community, and the academic and private sector. Together, we’re working to make Phoenix the most sustainable desert city in the world.”

The City’s Climate Action Plan sets a bold course toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030, complementing SRP’s own 2035 Sustainability Goals. Key initiatives driving progress include clean energy and solar adoption, electric vehicle fleet expansion, shade and tree equity programs, and energy affordability.

Phoenix’s recognition underscores how public-private partnerships play a vital role in meeting regional sustainability targets. By aligning efforts with SRP and other partners, Phoenix continues to innovate and implement strategies that strengthen resilience against extreme heat, promote energy equity, and advance the transition to a cleaner future.
