Building a Sustainable Transportation Future in Phoenix
By 2050, we aim to make walking, cycling, and transit the preferred ways to get around in every Phoenix neighborhood. Our goal is for 90% of residents to live within a half-mile of transit and for 40% to commute by walking, biking, or public transportation.
Today, 86% of Phoenix residents live within a half-mile of transit, but fewer than 10% use these options for their daily commutes. To create a more sustainable and accessible transportation system, we are taking two key actions:
1. Expanding Transportation Choices Through the Transportation 2050 Plan
We are improving public transit and active transportation networks by:
- Tripling light rail miles to 60, making travel more convenient and accessible.
- Expanding bus routes and increasing service frequency so 90% of residents are within a 10-minute walk of transit, with more shaded bus stops for comfort.
- Building 300 miles of walkable bike paths, greenways, and vibrant canal routes to create safer and more enjoyable spaces for cycling and walking.
- Enhancing bike and pedestrian infrastructure by expanding the bike share system and promoting walking-friendly communities.
2. Reducing Transportation Emissions by 80%
To create a cleaner, low-carbon transportation system, we are:
- Developing 15 compact, complete centers across the city where residents can easily access essential services within their own communities.
- Supporting environmentally friendly transportation by investing in electric vehicle infrastructure and promoting low-carbon fuel options.
These efforts will help create a more connected, livable, and sustainable Phoenix for generations to come.
