Apprenticeship Program

About the program

The Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program is for anyone ready to start a career with the City of Phoenix. 

Developed as a partnership between the City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department and Laborers' ​International Union of North America (LIUNA), Local 777, the Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program offers a competitive starting salary, regular wage increases, on-the-job training and certifications, and a non-competitive promotion upon successful completion of the program. 

The Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program was developed to attract and train individuals with the desire to learn new skills and become an essential part of the City of Phoenix. This 4,328 hour program will develop skilled operators through a combination of classroom and on-the-job training designed to educate apprentices in the functions necessary to maintain city roadways and right-of-way. Along the way, apprentices will earn their Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) and their Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

While there is no prior Street Maintenance experience necessary,  applicants do need to have a valid Class D driver's license for a minimum of one year, and pass medical, drug and background checks. All required training (including CDL) is paid for and provided by the City of Phoenix

The opportunity for continued growth and advancement within the City of Phoenix depends largely on the drive and determination of the individual. 

As you learn new skills within the Street Maintenance Division, you can promote to other positions and increase your salary. You also can earn a degree with the assistance of the city's college reimbursement program, and promote to any one of the hundreds of positions the city has to offer in multiple departments.​

The Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program includes a starting salary of $18.30 per hour. In addition, apprentices will receive regular wage increases at 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 hours upon successful completion of required hours. 

Upon successful graduation from the program, apprentices will receive a non-competitive promotion to Street Maintenance Worker.

No experience necessary

Previous street maintenance experience and a Class (A) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are not required. Selected candidates will receive the on-the-job training and instruction needed to secure a Class (A) CDL while earning a salary.

The program will assist candidates in:

  • Securing a Class (A) Commercial Driver's License Learning Permit (CLP)
  • Securing a Class (A) Commercial Driver's License with Trailer Endorsement

Completing all required in-class Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program and transitioning to a service center to complete their apprenticeship.

The selection process

Street Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship Program applications will be selected throughout the year based on current and anticipated staffing vacancies.

  • ​Application packets will be evaluated on all completed materials submitted. Incomplete packets will not be considered.
  • All applicants must attend at least one informational skills and assessment session, and successfully pass a physical assessment to be selected for the interview process.
