Phoenix Human Relations Commission

Promote respect and understanding among all groups by eliminating discrimination throughout the City of Phoenix by advising Mayor and City Council on human relations issues and assists in implementing the City’s policy against discrimination.

Membership

Members are expected to attend meetings on the 3rd Tuesday at 6:00 pm, every month at:

The Commission is made up of 17 volunteer citizens appointed by the mayor and City Council.

Arizona Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Celebration

Celebrating the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Award, Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award, and the AZ MLK "Drum Major for the Community" Award

Each year the Phoenix Human Relations Commission, in collaboration with the City of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, and Arizona OIC, recognizes the accomplishments of Phoenix area residents, including youth, who contributed significantly to creating a compassionate and socially just community. Honorees are recognized at the annual Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Breakfast Celebration.

Join the City of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department and The Phoenix Human Relations Commission, in collaboration with the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, and the Arizona OIC in celebration of honoring Arizonians championing cultural diversity, awareness, and unity by acknowledging the legacy and contributions of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in this world towards a quest for equality for all people.

The Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Award

This award recognizes exceptional individuals who have made Phoenix a better place to live through a lifelong dedication to promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people. Nominations must emulate the lifelong dedication of Calvin G. Goode. In 1994, Calvin G. Goode was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Award

This award recognizes individuals who embody the ideas of Dr. King through their continued personal committment to human relations and social justice.

AZMLK "Drum Major for the Community"

The AZMLK "Drum Major for the Community" award recognizes an organization or business that has demonstrated exceptional achievement and committment to promoting and practicing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) for Phoenix residents.

Nominations for youth are encouraged.
