Often times, people called for jury duty at Phoenix Municipal Court, have questions about what jury duty entails and the expectations.
Yes. All Phoenix residents are obligated by state law to serve as jurors, when called (summonsed), unless any of the following apply:
- The resident is not a United States citizen;
- The resident is under 18 years of age;
- The resident has been convicted of a felony and the resident's civil rights have not been restored.
Failure to attend jury duty may result in penalties provided by law (A.R.S. § 21-223).
If you are eligible to vote in City of Phoenix elections, if you pay for City of Phoenix services (i.e., water, trash pick-up, etc.), and live in incorporated boundaries in Phoenix, you are eligible to serve as a juror at Phoenix Municipal Court.

Yes, you can submit a request to postpone jury duty (either online, or by telephone) for 60 or 90 days. If you choose to postpone your jury duty, a new group number will be assigned to you. Please make a note of the new group number for future reference.

Possibly. Some people may qualify to be excused, however, strict provisions apply.
Example: a prospective juror who is at least seventy-five years of age may submit a written statement to the court requesting that the person be excused from service.

- If you are a working, nursing mother you can be postponed to another date.

No. It is your responsibility to arrange for child care before you report for jury duty.
No, only jurors are allowed into the Jury Assembly Center.
You will receive a mileage reimbursement check, unless you use public transportation and choose to receive one bus pass instead. The rate for mileage reimbursement is set by law and the roundtrip distance is based on the mileage from the center of your zip code to the Court. If you are selected to serve on a jury, you will be paid $12 per day, which is set by law.
State Law (A.R.S. § 21-236) prohibits an employer from discharging, harassing, or discriminating against an employee for being absent to serve as a juror, provided the employee gives reasonable notice of their scheduled jury duty. Employers are not required to pay employees while on jury duty; however, many employers elect to provide compensation. You will receive documentation of your jury duty, as some employers require proof of service.

The Superior Court Jury Commissioner develops a list of potential jurors which is drawn from the County Voter Registration List and Motor Vehicle Division records. A computer then randomly selects jurors from all individuals with a Phoenix residential address.
